Northern League Div 1
Newton Aycliffe 0
Dunston UTS 1
Dunston travel to Newton
Aycliffe for a league game. Aycliffe have had a poor start
to the season and are now on to their fourth manager of the
season in Peter Dixon who recently left West Auckland. Since
coming to the club Dixon has introduced new players but as
yet is still looking for his first victory.
Dunston are fresh from their mid
week victory away to Consett which now sees them in fifth
place in the league with 27 points from their 12 games.
Dunston have yet another new signing in the form of
Greg McDermott, son of ex Newcastle and Liverpool player
Terry but have lost the services of Jack Burns (work
commitments) and Gary Shaw (Seaham RS) who have moved on
after giving Dunston faithful service in last few years and
the manager Billy Irwin has thanked the lads for their
efforts for the club.
Today's team welcomes back
Michael Dixon who was unavailable for the midweek game and
promises to be competitive as Dunston attempt to continue
their current winning run.
Dunston opened the game brightly
playing some controlled football but failing to
create chances and on 5 minutes Aycliffe started putting
pressure on the Dunston defence after Dunston had lost the
ball in mid pitch, Garthwaite took a shot which was
deflected over the bar and 3 minutes later Garthwaite again
struck a shot which was partially blocked and Connell
collected easily.
On 12
Dunston got into the Aycliffe box but we're unable to get a
shot in. Banks was played through a minute later but a good
challenge by Harrison ensured he came away with the ball. 2
minutes later Archer played into Young whose header was
collected by Connell. Bulford won Dunstons first corner on
16 and from McAndrews corner he controlled the ball at the
front post but the ball just went out of play as he turned
to shoot. On 20 Bulford released a lofted shot over the bar
and on 24 Ormston cross was challenged by Bulford and
Burrell but neither made the right contact. A minute later,
Young crossed for Garthwaite whose volley went over the bar.
A further minute on Conner Winter beat Coulson but Gilhespy
covering forced the ball out for a corner which was cleared
by Dixon for another corner at the front post.
On 28 Harrison took a free kick
which rebounded back off the keeper Winter to McAndrew whose
shot went wide of the far post. On 30 Banks had a shot from
30 yards out which went over the bar. On 39, Burrell shot
from 25 yards and Winter somehow kept it out of his net with
a one handed save down low to his right. The score remained
goalless upto halftime although Dunston had to make a
substitution on 43 as Scorer came on for the injured Coulson
(knee)
Half
time. 0-0
The second half started as the
first had finished with both sides unable to
create openings until the 51st minute as Garthwaite
picked up a loose ball from Gilhespy and shot wide. 2
minutes later Ormston crossed and Burrell's header was
cleared by Broom. Bogey on 64, dribbled across the pitch
and shot wide of the far post. Another close call for
Aycliffe came as Halliday swung the ball in and over
Winter only for the ball to bounce on the cross bar and
out of play. On 57 minutes Aycliffe replied as
Conner Winter crossed for Young whose shot was blocked
and cleared. And minute later Young shot over the bar
from 30 yards out. On 61 Dixon for Dunston headed over
from a Halliday corner.
On 69, McAndrew got clear
and crossed which was cleared back to of McAndrew, again
he crossed deep into the goal but the Aycliffe defence
cleared the box this time. On 70, Banks beat Scorer and
was advancing into the box as Gilhespy made a telling
tackle and cleared. In the 75 minute Dunston took the
lead as a McAndrew cross from the right wing was cleared
to the outside of the box straight at Michael Dixon who
touched the ball forward and sent a superb volley into
the Aycliffe net from 30 yards out.
On 80 minutes McAndrew crossed
the ball 3 yards off the line and the advancing Fenwick
just failed to make contact but his marker did not and
fortunately for him and Aycliffe the ball went straight
into the keepers arms on the goal line. Aycliffe were
eager to reply and they too played the ball across the
Dunston goal but it was cleared.
On 83, Dixon crossed and Burrell
was up challenging the keeper who collected the ball in
the air. Aycliffe's last chance came on 84 minutes as
Mitton put a header from a corner wide of the mark. The
remainder of the game was played out by the defiant
Dunston side who secured another away victory.
Full time score:
Newton Aycliffe. 0 Dunston 1
Dunston were fortunate to come
away with all 3 points on this below par
team performance against a willing Aycliffe side who
only lacked the ability to score against the defiant
Dunston defence, However, after the goal came, only one
side was going to win as the Dunston side closed ranks.
Dunston Man of the Match:
Luke Gilhespy best of a below par performance, did
nothing wrong but made 2 definite goal stopping
challenges preventing Newton Aycliffe from getting
through on to the Dunston goal.
